South African broadcasting legend Bob Mabena (51) passed away on Monday after suffering a cardiac arrest.
According to reports, Bob fell ill on Friday and spent Saturday and Sunday in hospital and was discharged on Monday but shortly after leaving the hospital with his wife, he stopped breathing. His wife turned back to the hospital where they tried to resuscitate him but after 2 hours, he was confirmed dead.
With a career spanning over 31 years, and having worked as stations such as Radio Metro (Metro FM), Kaya FM and most recently Power FM where he was the Station Manager and breakfast show host, Bob revolutionised radio in South Africa.
As the country continues to mourn and pay tribute to Bob Mabena President Ramaphosa has also issued a statement regarding this great loss:
President Ramaphosa said: “This is a sad loss not only to Bob’s family and friends, but to the broadcast fraternity and the country. His exceptional talent and voice of reason and insight reached millions of South Africans in their homes, workplaces and vehicles. “It is very sad that such an iconic and household voice has gone silent. May his soul rest in peace”.
