In a leaked email, Helen Zille, Chairperson of the Democratic Alliance’s Federal Council, outlined the party’s demands for cabinet appointments. This comes after the African National Congress (ANC) announced its willingness to form a Government of National Unity (GNU) following the 2024 national elections.
The ANC welcomed the DA’s decision to join the GNU, but the DA is seeking to occupy 11 ministry departments, including Mineral Resources and Energy, Transport, Trade, Industry and Competition, and Public Works and Infrastructure, among others. Zille also stipulated that deputy ministers in these departments must be DA members.
In response, ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula took to Twitter, stating, “Negotiating through leaking demands to the media is an act of bad faith… The President has the final say on cabinet appointments. The GNU cannot be held to ransom by any single party. The people need a government established sooner rather than later.”
With time running out, South Africa may see a significant number of ANC cabinet members lose their jobs due to the party’s failure to secure over 50% +1 of the votes in the recent elections, which would give ANC an outright majority.
