Orlando Pirates Crowned 2022 MTN8 Champions

Orlando Pirates have added the MTN8 championship to their collection once again having won the trophy in 2020. Pirates were crowned the 2022 MTN8 Champions on Saturday evening, 05 November 2022 at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

The final was attended by former president Jacob Zuma and the newly crowned King Misuzulu kaZwelithini amongst others. The final against AmaZulu was expected to be a tough encounter as bothteams had won against difficult opponents to be part of the final.

The first minute of the match Nkosinathi Sibisi got an injury when he collided with AmaZulu player Gabadinho Mhango that resulted in him being stretched out of the match and being replaced by Paseka Mako. A free kick by Monnapule Saleng in the 25th minute of the match would be the only goal that separated the two teams.

Pirates showed dominance in the first half with the match going to halftime with them leading in Durban. AmaZulu seemed to be bringing the challenge to Pirates in the second half withLehlohonolo Majoro’s attempt at a goal hitting the upright. Man ofthe match was Miguel Timm.

Pirates beat Mamelodi Sundowns 3-0 and Royal AM 2-1 to lift the trophy.

The Ezimnyama ngenkani head coach Jose Riveiro joined the team in June 2022 signing a three year deal.
