Miss South Africa 2024 Mia Le Roux recently unveiled the national costume she would have strutted the runway in at the Miss Universe pageant had she not withdrawn.
Unfortunately due to health concerns, Mia had to withdraw from the competition just a day before the finale.
Meanwhile, in the Western Cape at the Cape Town Fashion Week, Mia had the chance to show the country what her national costume looked like. The dress is a collaboration with renowned South African artist Dr Ester Mahlangu, who is recognised worldwide for her beautiful Ndebele designs.
The white-cloud wings, which accompanied the costume, are made of feathers sourced from Cape Karoo International in Mia’s hometown of Oudtshoorn and were created by Hollywood Costumes.
Helen du Toit, Hollywood Costumes owner, explains, “Many South African know that when Le Roux had a cochlea implant, her first spoken words two years later were ‘look there, white clouds’.
“This profound moment inspired the wing design, which symbolises the first time she was able to use her voice. The white clouds, made from ostrich feathers, represent hope.”
Although the costume is beautiful, I personally don’t think it serves us well as a National costume. South Africa is so diverse and incredibly beautiful and our national costume on a global stage such as Miss Universe should capture and portray our diversity and beauty to the world.
Nonetheless, Mia would have looked stunning in that stage.
