A suspect in connection to Marolein Schmidt (40) has been detained. It is believed that the well-known physiotherapist Marolein Schmidt was murdered in her her home in the early hours of Women’s Day.
Schmidt was found around 1am in her home in Richmond Hill with stab holes and was left to die. The provincial police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg mentioned that Schmidt’s neighbours heard a sound of a breaking glass as well as a sound of her screaming.
“The neighbours immediately responded and found her lying on the floor with stab wounds. She was rushed to hospital but succumbed to her injuries,” says Janse van Rensburg.

Captain Janse van Rensburg mentioned that detectives from the Humewood SAPS came in the early hours of Thursday the 10th of August. The detectives suspect that the reason that led to the murder of Schmidt’s could be robbery.
Captain Janse van Rensburg continued to say that the “The 29-year-old suspect was arrested in central Gqeberha and is detained for the murder,” .
It was said that the suspect is expected to make their first court appearance on Monday the 14th of August 2023.
The Nelson Mandela District Commissioner, major General Vuyisile Ncata instructed the detectives to conduct an arrest at a speedy pace.
“The dedication, commitment and professionalism of these officers undoubtedly contributes to the safety and security of our community. We will be working closely with the NPA to ensure that the suspect is denied bail,” says major General Ncata.
According to The Pink Physio, Schmidt was a qualified Stellenbosch University who graduated around 2005. It was also mentioned that she did a stellar job in the field of Physiotherapy.
She owned her practice and growing up as a child she grew up in a medical home which aided her to develop an interest as well as passion in helping people.

Richmond Hill Community group gave Schmidt a tribute saying that “We mourn Marolien’s death, we celebrate her life as a sport woman ( Iron man!) as a dynamic and excellent physiotherapist, an animal lover, supporter of the sick, her sharp sense of humour, her strong friend and family ties, her determination to overcome long Covid (and competed again in the 70, 3 Iron Man!) and last but not least, her dedication to the sport disciplines she participated in,”.
The Richmond Hill Community group also asked that the have a candle light ceremony in tribute as well as remembrance of Marolein Schmidt on the day at around 7pm.
