South African Olympic champion swimmer Chad le Clos revealed that he lost his house due to the fatal fires in Sea Point, Cape Town while competing at the Commonwealth Games.
Chad shared the devastating news with an Instagram post, detailing that his apartment was gutted by the fire alongside several others in his block. The fire happened just a day after he became the most decorated athlete in Commonwealth Games history while competing in Glasgow, Scotland.
“On the evening of 30 July, amidst breaking the all-time Commonwealth record, a fire started in my apartment block, which quickly spread to my home,” le Clos posted late on Tuesday. “Sadly my home, where I’ve lived for more than a decade, burnt down and there is nothing left to salvage.”
Chad offered condolences to an elderly man who died in the fires and also shared that he will be raising funds through his foundation to help his neighbours rebuild their homes.
