The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup draw took place on Saturday morning, 22 October 2022 in Auckland.
Banyana Banyana has been drawn in group G alongside Sweden, Italy and Argentina. Zambia were drawn in group C with Costa Rica, Spain and Japan. Nigeria is in group B with Australia, Republic of Ireland and Canada. Morocco is in group H with Germany, Colombia and Korea Republic.
The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup will take place from 20 July to 20 August 2023 Co hosted by New Zealand and Australia.
As per the statement released by South African Football Association (SAFA) with Banyana Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis comments, “We have played against Sweden before, (but) we have not played Italy and Argentina. It could have been a tougher one, so we are happy with it…We have played against the Netherlands and they are similar. And with regards to Argentina , we have played against Brazil and they are similar. Italy are from the same continent as the Netherlands, but maybe they are different types of team.”
The South African team previously played in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup and did not make it past the group stages.
