Volkswagen Debuts its First Electric GTI

Europe’s largest car manufacturer Volkswagen, recently debuted its new full electric GTI, referred to as the ID. GTIConcept show car. The car was showcased in Munich at the IAA Mobility automotive event.

Volkswagen’s GTI brand has been a success for the past 48 years, since the introduction of the Golf GTI MK1 back in 1976. VW now plans to carry on the GTI heritage into the electric vehicle era.

“With the ID. GTI Concept, we are taking the GTI DNA into the electric age. It remains sporty, iconic, technologically progressive and accessible, but now with a new interpretation for tomorrow’s world: electric, fully connected, and extremely emotive. Here, driving pleasure and sustainability are a perfect match. This means GTI has a future- for our brand and for the fans.”, says VW CEO Thomas Schafer.

VW has not shared any information concerning the power output figures of their ID. GTI as yet. However, the car will have an electric motor driving power to the front wheels of the vehicle. According to VW, the ID. GTI’s electric motorwill provide the driver with instant maximum power, and torque output which is common amongst electric cars.

The ID. GTI Concept will have an intelligent system on board. Due to this, VW is yet to change the I in the ‘GTI’ name from ‘Injector’, to ‘Intelligence’.

From a design aspect, the ID. GTI Concept looks like an updated version of the current golf 8 GTI. It has 20” alloy wheels, and so far, the concept models of the ID. GTI are painted in Diamond Silver Metallic and Mars Red, which are the main colours that were traditionally painted on the first-generation Golf GTI models.

The ID. GTI Concept has a digital display cockpit, and a futuristic looking dashboard that less buttons. The ID. GTI Concept has a 12-inch infotainment system and a new version of the head-up display. This head-up display will illuminate on the entire windscreen making it visible to the front seat passenger. Ambient lighting is also available on the ID.GTI, and it turns red as soon as the driver switches the driving mode to GTI mode.

The ID. GTI also has the traditional GTI sports bucket seats with a modern look, and a ‘GTI heartbeat’ embedded on the left side of the two front seats. In terms of practicality, the ID. GTI Concept has four doors, and it can comfortably fit in five passengers inside the cabin. The car also has 490 litres of boot space.

“With its sporty overall concept, the ID. GTI Concept shows the great potential of the future product line.”, says VW.
