Volkswagen Believes in Empowering The Youth

Volkswagen understand the challenges faced by  young people in South Africa, especially challenges such as youth unemployment. Since 1989 when the Volkswagen Community Trust was established, the motoring manufacture has been committed to empower young people for them to have better futures.

The motoring manufacture is committed to helping, equipping and training the youth so they can have skills and experience to improve their chances of being employed by potential employees. In these community program’s Volkswagen has invested at least R200 million for youth empowerment.

This has been evident on an annual basis through Volkswagens commitment to hire in-service trainees, graduates, artisan apprentices as well as other candidates that take part in their respective career fields within the Youth Employment Services Program.

I believe if youth is given the opportunity in an environment where they can thrive, they gain confidence to reach success anywhere. It is also a way for us to ensure that we have sufficient skills in our recruitment pool,” said Russel Coleman, VWSA Human Resource Director.

Thanks to the Volkswagen Community trust which concentrates on youth development in communities on issues such as social and creative skills and education, many youth individuals have gotten a chance to get empowered, get their families empowered as well as the economy and society they live in.

VWSA Corporate Affairs and Government Director,Nonkqubela Maliza said that “Our main focus areas are education and youth development as we believe these are the key drivers to addressing the problem of inequality in South Africa.” She continued to mention that the Volkswagen Community Trust answers and resolves issues that happen in and around communities such as Kariega.

Amongst these educational programs are additional mathematics and science classes as well as bursaries for high school learners and tertiary students. Recently the motoring manufacturer launched another program called Work Readiness and Placement Program that seeks to connect the gap between an unemployed youth to potential companies that are in need and seeking to hire youth. The training takes place at the KwaNobuhle-loveLife Youth-Centre in Kariega, Eastern Cape as well as at the Afrika Tikkun Service Centre in Randburg, Gauteng.

“The key objective of the programme is to equip work-seekers with the competencies and skills required to be successful in the workplace. Young people often lack experience in work etiquette. Our programme seeks to empower them with skills to overcome this and breeds confidence they require to excel in their jobs,” says Maliza.
