South African singer Tyla has made history by winning the first Grammy award for the new “Best African Music Performance” category. The “Water” hitmaker beat Nigeria’s Burna Boy, Davido, Ayra Starr, Asake and Olamide to the coveted Grammy.

Tyla accepted her award in true South African style, dressed in a gorgeous sage green, sparkling Versace gown. She took to the stage to thank God, her team and the Grammy’s for creating this new category to recognise African artists.
“Oh my – what the heck!” Tyla said at the start of her acceptance speech. “Oh my gosh, guys. This is crazy. Like I never thought I’d say, ‘I won a Grammy at 22 years old, guys’,” she exclaimed.

“Thank you to the Recording Academy for this category. It’s so important and I know I’m forgetting some things, but I won a Grammy! Thank you, thank you,” she said, ending her speech.
