My favourite class of car is the executive sedan segment, consisting of the Mercedes-Benz E-class, Audi A6 and BMW 5-series. The normal cars with four- and six-cylinder variantsare excellent daily drivers. The game starts changing when you introduce a V8 variant, used in the BMW M550i and this M5 model.
The used market has been quite friendly with the 2017 to 2020 preface lift BMW F90 M5s’. They are retailing for R 1 million to 1.1 million for the clean title cars. Which is an absolute bargain considering the performance on tap, in this family super sedan.
Without moving to the more expensive and powerful M5 Competition Pack. The standard M5 has the same 4.4 litre twin turbo V8 making 25 horsepower less than the Competition Pack at 600 horsepower and the same 750 Nm of torque. Routed through an eight-speed torque convertor automatic transmission, sending all that power to an M XDrive system. More interestingly is the all-wheel drive system, that can decouple the front drive train essentially making it a rear wheel drive, 600 horsepower slide machines. We first saw this technology in the Mercedes-AMG E63S, its competitor. The performance is available and with the non-competition pack version, the ride comfort is better whether in comfort or sports plus.
The exterior design is very menacing, angled, and sportier over the standard 5-series. It has bigger air intakes at the bottom of the grille feeding air into that engine. It has the signature BMW eyes with LED technology that can block certain parts of the road and illuminate signs and obstacles at night. It also gets bigger brakes and wheels adding to the aggressive side profile. Sitting lower and wider than the standard versions. The rear is a sight most cars will be seeing once it gets past them. The design of the lower parts is unique to the M5, with the diffuser surrounding the quad exhaust tips.
In the interior is where the driver and his passengers will be spending their time, enjoying the exclusive leather seats. Being the M model there are M badges all around the dash, digital gauge cluster and seats. The steering wheel and seats are more sportier feeling over the M550i.
The seats are very comfortable and very adjustable for a sportier drive, and they can be optioned out with messaging seats. The steering wheel has two red buttons to configure the drivers’ ideal individual settings for the drivetrain, suspension, gearbox, exhaust, and brakes. This very car has rear entertainment option ticked for rear passengers. It is a rare option equipped on M5s.
The BMW M5 is not the ultimate super sedan but with that performance and luxury, it sure gets close to the best of the best.
