The South African entertainment industry is in mourning following the news of the passing of beloved veteran actress Connie Chiume. The actress, aged 72, passed away today at Garden City Hospital.
The news was confirmed by family members in a heartfelt post on Chiume’s official Instagram account. The post reads, “The Chiume Family regrets to inform you of the passing of the International Acclaimed award-winning actress Connie Chiume. Connie Chiume 72, passed on at Garden City Hospital today on the 6th of August 04. The family asks for privacy during this difficult period. The family will communicate further details.”
Chiume’s illustrious career spanned decades, earning her a place in the hearts of many South Africans and a revered status in the entertainment industry. Best known for her roles in popular television dramas and films, including her standout performance in the critically acclaimed series “Gomora” and her appearance in the international blockbuster “Black Panther,” Chiume’stalent and grace on screen were unparalleled.
Born on June 5, 1952, Chiume began her acting career in the late 1970’s and quickly rose to fame. Her contributions to the arts were recognised with numerous awards and accolades, celebrating her as a trailblazer for women in the industry.
Chiume is survived by her children and grandchildren, who have requested privacy as they grieve their loss. Details regarding memorial services will be shared in due course.
