South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is making efforts to correct South Africa’s stance towards Russia as to whether President Vladimir Putin will be attending the 15th Brics Summit in August 2023. Ramaphosa aims to handle the matter with care and ensure a well-managed outcome.
Ramaphosa has been under a great pressure to decide on Putin’s attendance after the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued a warrant for Putin’s arrest. He was accused of human rights violations in the war in Ukraine.
In response to growing speculations surrounding Putin’s visit, Ramaphosa has reassured the public that the matter will be well-handled.
“Let’s wait for the normal course of things instead of spreading rumours and untruths. What I can guarantee is that this matter will be well handled, and I will make the announcement,” Ramaphosa told to the media on Tuesday.
He has emphasized his commitment to making an announcement regarding Putin’s attendance. Reports indicate that Ramaphosa could receive a report on Putin’s visit, which will inform his decisions and guide South Africa’s approach with Russia. This approach reflects the president’s dedication to making informed and strategic choices.
Ramaphosa’s efforts to correct South Africa’s stance towards Russia indicate a desire for a balanced relationship that aligns with the country’s broader foreign policy objectives. By actively seeking a course correction, the President aims to maintain strong diplomatic ties while safeguarding national interests.
As President Putin’s visit draws near, the outcomes of Ramaphosa’s diplomatic efforts remain to be seen. However, the President’s commitment to a well-handled course correction and his approach to foreign policy signal a potential shift in South Africa’s Russia stance, with the aim of creating a balanced and mutually beneficial relationship in the future.
