Oscar Pistorius (37) has been granted parole after several attempts. The former Paralympic champion will be a free man on January 5, 2024.
Oscar was sentenced to 15 years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in February 2013. He shot her multiple times through a bathroom door on Valentine’s Day in 2013, later claiming he mistook her for a burglar at their Pretoria home. The decision was taken following a hearing at the Atteridgeville Prison in Pretoria on Friday 24 November.
Reeva’s mother June Steenkamp did not oppose the parole application this time around but made it clear that she did not believe that Oscar has been rehabilitated. She said she hoped Pistorius’ temper and his behaviour towards women would be addressed.
Her lawyer shared with the media that they were prepared for the outcome and the decision did not come as a surprise for them.
“I prepared her quite well for the fact that he will possibly get parole. I also prepared them in March this year earlier. So we did expect the outcome, it didn’t come as a surprise. And because it’s part of our law. Our legal system dictates that an offender,, after they’ve served a certain portion of their sentence is eligible to be considered.”His early release conditions state that he will not be able to leave the area without permission from the authorities. As well as having to attend anger management classes, and a programme on violence against women, he will also have to complete community service. His parole will end when the full term of his sentence expires, on December 5 2029.
The parole conditions for Oscar include doing community service, attending anger management classes that will also focus on gender based violence. He is also not allowed to leave the area which he will resides at (Pretoria) without informing authorities. These conditions will be set until his full sentence comes to an end on 5 December 2029.
