The Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday 06 June 2023, found soccer star Thembinkosi “Lorch” guilty of strangling and assaulting his ex-girlfriend, Fundisiwa Nokuphiwa Mathithibala. The soccer star is set to appear again in court on 23 July 2023 for sentencing.
This case dates back in September 2020, when the player’s ex-girlfriend laid an assault complaint with the Midrand Police. According to NPA regional spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane, Lorch’s ex-girlfriend Fundisiwa Nokuphiwa Mathithibala, told her that she was visiting Lorch at his house in Midrand, when he later left her inside his home to go out with his friend. As time went by Nokuphiwa realised that it was getting late, so she then sent a message to Lorch requesting him to return her car keys.
Upon Lorch’s arrival, a heated argument between the two started, resulting in Lorch acting aggressively towards her by strangling, and beating her up. After that, Nokuphiwa called for help and Lorch’s friend then defused the situation.

The following day after this incident took place, Lorch was then arrested on 07 September 2020. He was later released on R2000 bail, from there, court proceedings took place ultimately leading to him being found guilty of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to his ex-girlfriend.
Mjonondwane further mentioned that State Prosecutor, Michele Hart argued that the medical evidence matched the evidence of the victim.
“The accused did not have any injuries which meant that he was the aggressor.” Says NPA Spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane.
Phindi Mjonondwane also said that Lorch and his witness were not credible sources throughout the court proceedings.

Lorch’s ex-girlfriend Nokuphiwa reacted to winning the case by saying, “Let them undermine you and honesty lead you.”, on Instagram.
“Soccer fans would hate this because they want their favourites player to away with domestic violence. Imagine if the girl was your own sister. Good ruling by the court-criminals must be punished irregardless of their rank in the society.” Says @Msenti91657768 on Twitter.
