As the world’s greatest athletes prepare to descend upon the City of Light, here is everything you need to know about the Paris Olympics: from the star-studded lineup and newly introduced sports, to the iconic venues and historic milestones. The Paris Olympics will kick off on Friday, July 26, with the opening ceremony, and conclude on August 11. However, the action begins earlier, with football and rugby sevens tournaments commencing on Wednesday, July 24. Archery and handball competitions starting on Thursday, July 25.

While various venues across France will be utilized, Paris will be the epicentre of the competition, with the majority of sports taking place within its borders. The iconic Jardins du Trocadéro (Gardens of Trocadero) has been selected as the prestigious setting for the opening ceremony, promising a spectacular kick-off to the games. Meanwhile, the Stade de France will provide a fitting finale, hosting the closing ceremony and brining the Olympic festivities to a triumphant close.
As stated by the Citizen chief sport journalist, a record-breaking of 32 sports are set to take centre stage. This milestone event will bring together 10, 000 athletes from 206 countries, making it the most inclusive sporting spectacle in the world.
South African news source ‘The Citizen’ also weighted in, highlighting that while their country won’t participate in every event, they are eager to see their athletes compete on the world stage. The United States will boast the largest team, with an impressive 592 athletes vying for gold.
A talented group of 147 athletes, representing 19 sports, will fly the South African flag at the Paris Olympics. Although slightly smaller than the record team that competed in Tokyo, this squad is packed with experience, skill, and determination. Led by s quintet of former Olympic medallists Tajana Smith, Chad le Clos, Wayde van Niekerk, John Smith, and Henri Schoeman. The team is poised to improve on the three medals won at the previous games.

South Africa will be represented in athletics, archery, badminton, canoeing, cycling, diving, equestrian, fencing, golf, gymnastics, hockey, rowing, rugby sevens, skateboarding, sport climbing, surfing, swimming, triathlon,and wrestling.
With a blend of seasoned veterans and fresh talent, participating countries are ready to make its mark on the world stage.
