Madoda Mxakwe Becomes the First SABC CEO to Complete a Term

SABC Group Chief Executive Officer Madoda Mxakwe, will be stepping down from his current position as GCEO, due to his 5-year term contract coming to an end on 30 June2023. This will therefore make Mr. Mxakwe the first SABC GCEO to ever complete a full term serving as a GCEO, from the past 15 years.

According to the SABC board, Ms. Nada Wotshela will be the one replacing Mxakwe as an acting CEO, effective from 1 July 2023, until the public broadcaster finds a fit candidate for the GCEO position.

On Tuesday 20 June 2023, the SABC released a press statement saying that Mr. Mxakwe was appointed back in 2018, when the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) was experiencing problems such as; corruption, gross mismanagement, financial failures, and a terrible financial situation.

“Over the past five years, Mr. Mxakwe and the management team worked closely with all employees and the board to reverse the dire situation, setting the public broadcaster on a recovery path and rebuilding its credibility. Although the financial sustainability challenges still persist, the SABC stabilized under his leadership.” Says the SABC in its press statement.

In its statement, the SABC expressed their gratitude towards Mr. Mxakwe for his significant contribution towards keeping the SABC afloat, despite the challenges he found when he was appointed back in 2018.

The temporarily appointed Group Chief Executive Officer Ms. Nada Wotshela has 20 years of experience working at the SABC. With 12 of those years working in senior management roles and executive roles.

“She possesses both the technical knowledge and the leadership skills of public broadcasting and is currently serving as Group Executive for Radio at SABC.” Said SABC in its statement.

The SABC Board is confident with their decision of appointing Ms. Wotshela, to take on this GCEO position, whilst they’re searching for a candidate to take on this role. The SABC board also urged the current SABC stakeholders to support Ms. Wotshela in her role as acting GCEO of the public broadcaster.
