The 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony took place tonight in Paris. Some of the worlds best footballers gathered to celebrate the honour of being nominated at the prestigious awards as well as applaud the nights winners.
South Africa was well represented by Ronwen Williams who was nominated for the Yachine trophy. Unfortunately he lost out to Argentina’s Emiliano Martinez. Ronwen was ranked 9th out of the Top 10 Best Goalkeepers in the world, which is an achievement still worth celebrating.
Barcelona’s teen sensation Lamine Yamal took home the Kopa trophy, while Barcelona’s women’s team was voted the best women’s team of 2024.
Barcelona’s Aitana Bonmati is this year’s Women’s Ballon d’Or winner, winning this award back to back from last year.
The biggest winner of the night was Manchester City’s Rodri who was voted the 2024 men’s Ballon d’Or winner. A big debate continues to rage online with some saying Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr was robbed of this award.
According to reports, upon learning that Vini would not be awarded the Ballon d’Or, all the Real Madrid nominees and clubs representatives decided to not attend this year’s ceremony.
