[CARS]: MG HS making a huge comeback to South African market

The new MG HS is the newest SUV on the block to rival Haval and their H6. But does it have a chance at being the best family SUV of 2025?

In terms of design the new MG HS is a looker, with sleek LED lights and huge grille, giving the HS a unique look against its competition. It is aggressive, and the bonnet adds to that aggression with hard creases hiding the powertrain underneath it. It looks better than the Haval H6 and with the different colors on offer it can change the appearance of that front end. The side profile is also very busy in its design, with hard bodylines and different 17-inch to 19-inch wheel options ranging from a silver finish, gloss black and a diamond cut finish. The rear is also very quirky but also very family friendly. The best color the offer for this is the very pigmented Dynamic Red.

The interior design is very minimalist but also has enough functionality from its dual screen layout and capacitive buttons to control some stuff in the infotainment. It is more on the luxurious side on the inside with different colors for the leatherette seats and lower dashboard. The infotainment itself is also very user friendly, quick, and inquisitive. With standard parking sensors, an 8-speaker audio system, parking sensors, heated and cooled seats and many more. And for a starting price of R499 900 to R665 900 it is an absolute bargain considering the standard features it comes equipped with.

There are two engine options a 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder producing 170 horsepower and 275 Nm of torque with a seven-speed dual clutch automatic, and a 2L turbocharged four-cylinder with 280 horsepower and 370Nm of torque routed through a nine-speed torque convertor automatic. Both versions are front wheel drive. For south African market, there are two trim levels available for both engine options, comfort, and luxury, which may also interfere with the prices.

This is one of the newest cars that provides more than the allocated price. It is better than the Haval H6. It seems to be creeping into luxury car territory like Mercedes-Benz, BMW,and Audi.
