The Democratic Alliance (DA) has rejected the African National Congress’s (ANC) revised offer for cabinet positions in South Africa’s government of national unity talks. The ANC’s offer was deemed unsatisfactory, leading to a formation of a unified government. The revision of the ANC recent offer has caused setbacks in the ongoing discussions.
As stated in the Daily Maverick, the UDM’s Bantu Holomisa stated that the DA was threating to withdraw the negotiations if the ANC stuck to its revised offer. Holomisa added the offer does not include trade, industry, and competition departments, which is unpalatable with the DA. “The ANC should have a plan B if the DA pulls out,”he replied.
DA Steenhuisen seeks another face-to-face meeting with Ramaphosa over GNU impasse. According to Eye Witness News (EWN) Ramaphosa once again is being compared to his mentor, South Africa’s father, Nelson Mandela. Ramaphosa has left gateway for more talks. This gave the DA an opportunity to ask for another meeting with the president this Friday afternoon.
As per the letter that was leaked to the media by President Cyril Ramaphosa accuses the DA of Jeopardising the foundation of setting up a Government of National Unity (GNU). These includes ANC wanting to be given at least 12 cabinet posts and the position of deputy president.
The delay in finalising the Cabinet is affecting the operational functions and members of the Parliament are unsure whether they will remain in their roles or not, Masibulule Xaso, secretary of the National Assembly highlights this impact to the Daily Maverick.
