They may have been knocked out in the semifinals but Bafana Bafana continue to win at AFCON 2023. Not only did the team finish third in the tournament, collecting bronze medals, they’ve also been awarded the “Fair Play Team” award and the captain Ronwen Williams takes home the “Best Goalkeeper” award.
It goes without saying that Williams had an impressive tournament, stepping up to the challenge and saving South Africa multiple times. However, it was his four historic saves in the penalty shoot out against Cape Verde that made him stand alone in this category.
Williams continued to make great saves against Nigeria in the semifinals and in the 3rd place playoffs against DR Congo.
Overall, Bafana Bafana played with determination, courage and a never dying spirit, all while respecting their opponents which is why they’ve been awarded the “Fair Play Team” award.
To say that South Africa is proud, would be an understatement! This Bafana team has sparked back the joy and faith the nation was had in Bafana Bafana. Indeed, Bafana deserve the hero’s welcome at OR Tambo international airport when they arrive on Wednesday, 14 February.
