Will Smith released a brief statement today, following last nights Oscars ceremony where he slapped comedian Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife Jada. In the statement, Will Smith acknowledges that he “was wrong” and “out of line”.
Chris took a slap from Will after making a joke about Jada’s shaved hairstyle, this after the actress previously publicly shared that she suffers from medical condition alopecia, which caused her hair loss.
In his post, Will said that he understood that “jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I react emotionally”.
“I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be,” he added. “There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”
While there have been some rumours that the Academy Awards might take Will’s Oscar award as a result of his actions, Whoopi Goldberg, who sits on the Academy’s board of governors, slammed the rumours on talk show The View saying “we’re not going to take that Oscar from him… but there will be consequences, I’m sure.”
