Kwaito star L’vovo Derrango reflects on life after surviving a stroke

Kwaito star L’vovo Derrango, real name Thokozani Ndlovu was one of South Africa’s much loved artists with an undeniable stage presence. Unfortunately, he suffered a stroke and life has not been the same since then.

L’vovo recently reflected on his journey and life after the stroke. Ndlovu suffered a stroke while performing on stage. What followed would be weeks the the intensive care unit fighting for his life. While he survived and was well on his way to recovery, he detailed that he lost personal relationships, ability to work and as a result fell into financial hardship.

“I never imagined my life would change so suddenly,” says L’vovo.

Despite losing so much, moving back home and having to start his life all over again, he remains encouraged that his life will get better. “There were days when I questioned whether I would ever stand on a stage again. But God gave me another chance, and I chose to fight every single day. If my story can inspire even one person not to give up, then every struggle has been worth it.”

He further detailed the loss of close friends and the financial impact the stroke had on his life.

“I suffered financially because I wasn’t working or receiving any bookings. I had to move back home. I was scare to go outside and be seen by people. My real friends would come, cook for me and took care of me. I received words of support. I also lost many people,” he says.

“I was unable to speak properly or project my voice, so making music simply wasn’t an option. There were moments when everything felt uncertain, but I refused to give up. Healing and recovery begin in the mind. Once you decide that you’re going to fight, your body follows.”

“I am one of the few people who were blessed enough to wake up from the ICU and be able to tell my story. This is truly my second chance at life. I live differently now. I eat well, I rest, I take care of myself and I appreciate every day that God gives me. I am finally living the way I should have before I fell ill.”
