The Johannesburg entertainment industry is mourning the loss of one of its pioneers. Maria McCloy, a renowned journalist, publicist, fashion designer and DJ has sadly passed away at the age of 50.
McCloy’s death was confirmed by her family through a brief statement that mentioned heart failure as the cause of death. She died on Tuesday evening at the Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg.
“It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we confirm the passing of our beloved sister and media industry giant, maria McCloy (50). Maria sadly passed away on Tuesday evening, 12 May 2026 at Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg following heart failure. Maria – a vibrant and creative soul who embraced life wholeheartedly as a DJ, Publicist and Fashion Designer – was loved by her family, friends, colleagues and community at large”, reads the statement.
Maria built a great reputation for herself over the years since the 90s when she co-founded a media company to promote local talent. “She helped shape the city’s creative landscape since the 1990s, from co-founding the groundbreaking Black Rage Productions and Outrageous Records, which helped launch the careers of artists like Proverb and Reason, to building a celebrated Afrocentric accessories and fashion label”.
“She had a special way of bringing people together, and her presence brought comfort, laughter and love to all who knew her,” the statement reads further. McCloy is survived by her mother and sisters, Thandiwe and Natasha, as well as extended family members and close friends.
The family also expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and condolences since they announced the news of her death.
