Once upon a time AMG was making big displacement V8s and V12 engines. They were Germantorque muscle cars. With the all-electric Mercedes-AMG EQS 53, did they manage to keep that reputation?

The Mercedes-AMG EQS53 is a new step for AMG. Using high voltage battery packs and four- electric motors to power this machine. It certainly has enough power to laugh in the face of most supercars. It is powered by two electric motors, making 658 Horsepower and 950 Nm of Torque routed through atwo-speed automatic and an all-wheel drive system. Launchingthis 2.5 ton super sedan to 0-100 in 3.5 seconds (independent testing) and over 220 Kph Limited top speed.

If you pay more for the AMG Dynamic Plus pack, that increases to 761 Horsepowerand 1020 Nm of Torque reducing that 0-100 to 3.1 seconds (independent testing) and an increase of 250 Kph Top Speed. This is definingly the AMG kind of performance we would expect, especially considering that it competes with the Porsche Taycan Turbo S, Tesla Model S Plaid and BMW I7 M60. Despite the AMG 53 model being a high performance variant it still delivers good milage from those electric motors. A 120 kWh lithium-ion battery pack with 432 Cell sits below the body of the AMG 53, that’s it weighs almost 2.5 tons. An Estimated range: of 540 Kilometres and Estimated Consumption rate of 200Wh/km, means you can still enjoy the benefits of an electric vehicle.

You may also enjoy the AMG’s level of interior design. It has a high dash and low seating position for an electric sedan, making it more sporty. You feel the S-class treatment in the interior, it has what they call ‘Hyperscreen’ that has the integrated wireless car play and some third-party apps to keep you entertained. This being the environmentally friendly model, the interior is not of high quality leather rather a more efficient recycled material leatherette.

The exterior design is questionable, Mercedes-AMG went for a more slippery design for maximum efficiency making it look very bulbous. Although with the AMG treatment, it looks very mean. Like all AMGs, it has the AMG grille, deeper lower air-intakes, bigger diffuser and bigger wheels.

This is definitely an AMG, in the looks department, especially with the different AMG specific colours, trims wheels, and carbon options. What’s not so AMG is the lack of quad exhaust tips, which has always been a signature AMG look.

The Porsche Taycan is defiantly the better looking electric performance super sedan and it does perform better. This AMG was made for electric car enthusiasts who want a bit of AMG luxury and performance.
