Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen is facing scrutiny over his recent appointment of Roman Cabanacas his chief of staff, but he remains firm in his defence of the decision. Steenhuisen, who is under fire for selecting the controversial right-wing figure, emphasised that Cabanac’s appointment was based on his experience and qualifications rather than his political background.
In a statement to News24, Steenhuisen addressed the controversy, noting his puzzlement at the comparison between Cabanac and DA MP Renaldo Gouws, who is embroiled in his own scandal involving racist language. “Mr. Cabanac is fulfilling an internal administrative role managing the staff and processes in the minister’s office,” Steenhuisen said. He highlighted Cabanac’s LLB degree and extensive experience as a legal consultant, arguing that his professional skills were essential for managing complex administrative duties within the ministry.
Cabanac, a known podcaster and conservative activist, has faced backlash for his past social media activity, including controversial comments and firearms-related posts. The City Press report detailing his appointment followed another scandal involving Gouws, raising concerns about the DA’s handling of controversial figures. While Gouws remains an MP despite being suspended from party activities, Cabanac’s role has sparked debate about the appropriateness of his appointment.
Steenhuisen criticised the focus on Cabanac’s personal views rather than his professional qualifications, asserting that Cabanac has no record of financial misconduct or involvement in state capture. However, Cabanac’s history, including his denial of the Sharpeville massacre and other provocative statements, has continued to fuel public debate and social media discussion.
As the DA investigates Gouws’ situation and Cabanac’s past comes under renewed scrutiny, Steenhuisen’s defence of his new chief of staff underscores the ongoing tension within the party regarding its handling of controversial figures and their impact on its public image.
