Home Affairs Investigation Uncovers Alleged Fraud in Miss SA Contestant’s Citizenship

The Department of Home Affairs on Wednesday 07 August has announced a significant development in its ongoing investigation into the citizenship status of Chidimma Adetshina, upcoming contestant in the upcoming Miss South Africa pageant. The Department revealed prima facie indications of potential fraud committed by Adetshina’s mother, leading to a broader and more intensive investigation.

The probe began following a request from the Miss SA organisers on 5 August 2024, to verify Adetshina’scitizenship after numerous outcries from citizens of South Africa to verify if indeed Adetshina is a South African Citizen or not. This request was supported by written consent from both Adetshina and her mother. In response, Home Affairs launched a comprehensive investigation, involving archival research, hospital visits, and on-site verifications.

Key findings from the investigation include:

1. Evidence suggesting that fraud and identity theft may have been perpetrated by the individual recorded as Adetshina’s mother in Home Affairs records.
2. Adetshina, being an infant in 2001, could not have been involved in her mother’s alleged unlawful actions.
3. An innocent South African mother, whose identity may have been stolen, faced difficulties registering her own child due to the alleged fraud.
4. The investigation has been expanded to include potential involvement of Home Affairs officials and is seeking legal advice on the impact of the fraud on Adetshina’s citizenship.

Home Affairs plans to press criminal charges against those found responsible once the investigation is concluded. This case underscores the need for urgent digital modernisation within Home Affairs to prevent similar fraudulent activities in the future.

The Department continues to engage with all relevant stakeholders, including Adetshina’s mother, and remains committed to upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of all involved.
