Britain’s New Prime Minister Speaks to President Cyril Ramaphosa

Keir Starmer who was appointed Britain’s new prime minister on the 5th of July 2024 by the head of state King Charles IIIduring an audience at the Buckingham Palace, has already began making acquaintance with head of states from different nations with a British interest. On the 7th of July 2024, the Labour Party leader spoke to South Africa’s president Cyril Ramaphosa who has also just been re-elected for a second term in office.

President Cyril Ramaphosa began the phone call by thanking the prime minister for an early opportunity to speak with him and congratulated Starmer for his landslide election victory. The leaders also discussed the importance of South Africa’s state visit in 2022 which was the first official state visit of his majesty King Charles III. They also emphasised on the very strong bond between the United Kingdom and South Africa, a relationship which both leaders intend to uphold.

Starmer and Ramaphosa will continue to work together to tackle world issues such as climate change, equal rights, economic growth, and equal opportunity for all ahead of next year’s G20 which will take place in South Africa. The two leaders will continue to keep in touch as they look forward to the summit.

61 years old Starmer led the UK Labour Party to an overwhelming victory after the party won over 326 seats in the House of Commons during the general elections. The left-learning party is returning to power after 14 years of Conservative Party leadership.
