After just winning the Dstv Premiership and PSL coach of the year awards a fortnight ago, It is alleged that Rhulani Mokwena and Mamelodi Sundowns FC are set to part ways with the former complaining about lack of appreciation from club’s administration. Mokwena who is now 37 years old progressed from being Sundowns assistant manager in 2014 to becoming the head coach in 2022.
Recently, Mokwena has publicly expressed his doubt about his position at Sundowns with the insinuation that his relationship with the upper management and sporting director Flemming Berg has turned sour. He once stated that he was not happy about not having a say regarding the welfare of players and their contracts during a POWERFM interview. He said, “Always when contracts come to an end, it’s quite complicated because it’s the agent, it’s the player, it’s the club and I don’t get involved in that space. So that space is more for the Sporting Director and the football club.” While players were going in for medical check-up at Chloorkop for the club’s pre-season preparations in Austria, Mokwena was not seen present which raised public eyebrows and suspicionthat all not really going well.
Both Sundowns and Mokwena have not yet release official statements to announce the end of their contract. It is also known that Mokwena had just agreed to a new 4-year contract barely 12 months ago and he also just led Sundowns to a successful 7th Dstv premiership championship in May. Mokwena’s agent, Steve Kapeluschnik is still in talks with Sundowns regarding the final terms of Mokwena’s departure from the club.
Football fans and supporters of Sundowns from around South Africa have expressed their disappoint and think that Mokwena’s departure at this stage when the team is preparing for new season may cause chaos within the club and that this may also led to poor performance if the synergy and cohesiveness of the club is negatively affected by this event and further disagreements.
