Due to inflation South Africans are adapting to thrifting as a means of acquiring clothes. With inflation increasing, many South Africans are finding it difficult to afford new clothing. As quoted by IOL news, Yaga, a social e-commerce company, over 500, 000 items have been saved from landfills. In South Africa, the second-hand clothing market is growing at a rate four time higher worldwide. Shockingly, IOL conducted a report that, thrifting market is expected to grow 127% by 2026.

Thrifting is a much more sustainable option. It is much more sustainable because returning one clothing item back into circular economy reduces its carbon footprint by 82% as written by Ninertimes. Additionally, buying second-hand helps contributes to decrease global textile demand.According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), thrifting reduces waste and extends the life of existing clothing, making it a more sustainable option.

A report by Business Wire predicts that by 2030, the resale market will be twice as big as the fast-fashion market. This means you should not feel guilt-free when buying second-hand. In an article published on Bixcommunity, Clampett, head of assets and property management (retail) of Attacq Limited stated, “Innovations does not involve only technology and digital solutions, but also encompasses changing business models and markets. Thrifting is part of a bigger movement to more responsible purchasing, driven mostly by younger shoppers.”
