The 17th annual South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) illuminated the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand on Saturday, September 30, marking a triumphant return to in-person ceremonies after three years of virtual events due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The star-studded affair, hosted by media personality Lawrence Maleka and former Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi, was an unforgettable celebration of the vibrant South African film and television industry under the theme “Our stories flow together,” emphasizing unity and diversity.

In a dazzling display of excellence, Netflix SA and kykNETemerged as the night’s reigning champions, clinching 19 and 15 Golden Horns respectively. eTV also had its moment in the spotlight, securing an impressive 12 awards. The ceremony celebrated the resilience and creativity of the industry, signalling a return to the glamour and camaraderie of pre-pandemic times.

The TV Comedy category witnessed a star turn for “How to Ruin Christmas,” securing an impressive five wins, a testament to the show’s popularity and the outstanding talent of its cast and crew. Meanwhile, “Justice Served” took the lead in the TV Drama category, showcasing the diverse storytelling that captivates audiences across the nation.

The prestigious Lifetime Achiever awards were bestowed upon the legendary Koos Roets and the late Derek Watts, honouring their significant contributions to the South African entertainment landscape.
