Zoleka Mandela, the granddaughter of anti-apartheid heroes Nelson Mandela and Winnie Madikizela Mandela, passed away on Monday evening, 25 September 2023. She was 43 years old. Her death came as a shock to many, marking the end of a life marked by courage, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference.

A Prolonged Battle with Cancer
Zoleka was admitted to hospital on Monday, 18 September for ongoing treatment for metastatic cancer. The cancer had spread to her hip, liver, lung, pelvis, brain and spinal cord. Recent scans revealed significant disease progression including fibrosis in the lungs as well as several emboli (blood clots).
Despite the severity of her condition, Zoleka remained hopeful and continued to share updates about her health with her followers. In one of her last posts on Instagram, she revealed that she had blood clots as well as fibrosis in her lung. She expressed gratitude that her condition was still treatable.

A Legacy of Hope and Inspiration
Zoleka was not just known for her famous lineage but also for her own contributions to society. As an author and activist, she used her platform to raise awareness about cancer and inspire others with her story. Her book ‘When Hope Whispers’ is a testament to her strength and determination.
She leaves behind four children, who will undoubtedly carry forward her legacy of hope and resilience. The Mandela family expressed their gratitude to the medical team that took care of Zoleka and thanked friends and family for their support during this difficult time.
