South African singer and songwriter Lira recently shared her story for the first time in her first radio interview since suffering a stroke in April 2022 while performing in Germany.
The stroke had affected her speech and vocals, causing her to take a break from performing as she works in recovering. Since her stroke, she has been working on regaining her speech.
Lira was recently interviewed by Relebogile Mabotja on The Upside of Failure on Radio 702, where she opened up about how she had to re-learn how to speak, read and write. Lira said that she does not take life for granted after suffering the stroke 14 months ago.
“I get surprised with how much progress I’m making and today is a good day”, she said that now is the right time to share her story.
“People have been asking me to share my story and I was not ready because I could not talk, I was not ready to have conversations but now I am ready and my speech impediment does not bother me as it did before and I am here to share my story.”

Lira said above all she is grateful for life.
“Just to enjoy life, I don’t take anything for granted, it has made me value life a bit more, when you have stroke,it calms you from the stress of life, when I am stressed I can’t speak so it is important for me to keep calm and peaceful”
Lira shared that it’s been six months since her stroke recovery journey and she is taking it easy and step by step.
“Today marks a year since I has stroke, at about 16:30pm I had a stroke, the sensation lasted about 15 minutes. I had no idea what was happening so I kept walking and nobody could see I had a stroke because I was walking normally. I waked into a restaurant but I could not talk, I moved my mouth but words could not come out. When I realized this, I just broke down”.
Speedy recovery to Lira and we know we’ll be seeing her back on stage doing what she does best.
