The South African Weather Service recently confirmed that the reports about a tornado hitting Inanda near Durban are true. So far, two people sustained injuries from the tornado that hit Inanda on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the South African Weather Service, the tornado in Inanda developed from the coastal part of Durban at approximately 13:00. The SA Weather Service said that a storm brewed in coast of Durban and remained in one place “cycled around” for an hour, until it moved inland at about 14:00, and ultimately developed into a tornado.
The tornado wreaked havoc in northern parts of Durban, leaving Inanda to suffer the most with severe damage to its infrastructure. So far, there has been reports about damage to power lines, roofs, and other forms of infrastructure.

Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA), had to suspend all its planned railway commutes due heavy rainfalls. This left people who are reliant on PRASA for transport to be left stranded in their respective areas.
The South African Weather Service has warned that more heavy rainfalls are yet to take place. The SA Weather Service also warned KwaZulu-Natal residents to find shelter in safer areas during this torrential rainfall, and strong winds in parts of Durban.
KwaZulu-Natal residents were also warned to avoid low lying arears. “The danger with low-lying arears is that you can’t see how far it goes down, so it’s best to avoid crossing bridges and flooded arears.”
The eThekwini municipality has dispatched an emergency joint operation team to respond to the heavy winds and rainfall that affected parts of Durban.
It is not the first time Durban experiences such destructive weather conditions. Back in 2022 in April, the province was affected by a flood that resulted in some people losing their lives, damages to homes, and other infrastructure.
